2021 Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying

FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE MONACO 2021 - QUALIFYING

Charles Leclerc takes shock pole position for Ferrari

Schumacher did not take part in qualifying and races at the stewards discretion

Charles Leclerc delivered on Ferraris shock Monaco Grand Prix pace to take a brilliant pole position in his home race but his delight was tempered by a heavy crash at the end of qualifying.

The Monegasque driver had been quickest in every practice session and he carried that form into qualifying, topping the times in Q1 and Q2.

In Q3, Leclerc was even more impressive, setting a new lap record with a time of 1:10.346.

However, on his final run, Leclerc lost control of his car at the Swimming Pool chicane and crashed heavily into the barriers.

The impact was so great that Leclerc's car was split in two and the red flags were waved.

Leclerc was able to climb out of his car and walk away from the crash, but he was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

The crash meant that Leclerc was unable to improve his time, but it was still good enough for pole position.

Max Verstappen will start alongside Leclerc on the front row, with Valtteri Bottas third and Lando Norris fourth.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will start seventh, after a disappointing qualifying session.

The race is scheduled to start at 14:00 local time on Sunday.
